Personal training vs. physical therapy: where the boundary is

A plain-language explanation of what John does, what licensed providers do, and why the boundary matters.

By John Overdorf · Updated 2026-06-23

Physical therapy is clinical care. Personal training is not. A physical therapist can diagnose and rehabilitate within a licensed scope. A trainer can coach exercise, strength, conditioning, mobility, and performance education after appropriate clearance.

The boundary protects the client. It keeps medical decisions with medical providers and lets training focus on practical progression.

Training and performance education are not a substitute for medical care. Clients with serious injuries should be cleared by their physician, surgeon, or physical therapist before beginning. Peptide and hormone-related decisions require a licensed medical provider.
